Attacker is free because no CCTV

Attacker is free because no CCTV

A lack of CCTV cameras has meant a glassing attacker has escaped conviction after a New Years Eve assault, victim Kylie Keough says. Ms Keough was hit in the face with a glass on December 31, 2008, at the Ashmont Inn but 17 months later the attacker has yet to be charged. Although the venue has extensive video surveillance, the beer garden in which Ms Keough was assaulted was a blind spot.

BusinessWire: Renesas, Australian Semiconductor Technology Company Pty Ltd (ASTC), and VLAB Works, a subsidiary of ASTC, announce a joint development of the VLAB/IMP-TASimulator virtual platform (VP) for Renesas R-Car V3M, an automotive SoC for ADAS and in-vehicle infotainment systems. The VP simulates image recognition and cognitive IPs in the R-Car V3M SoC and realizes embedded software development using a PC only, which enables the VP to shorten development time as well as improve software quality.

BrainChip Holdings announces that it has shipped its first BrainChip Accelerator card to a major European automobile manufacturer.

As the first commercial implementation of a hardware-accelerated spiking neural network (SNN) system, BrainChip Accelerator will be evaluated for use in ADAS and Autonomous Vehicle applications.

BrainChip Accelerator is said to increase the performance of object recognition provided by BrainChip Studio software and algorithms. The low-power accelerator card can detect, extract and track objects using a proprietary SNN technology. It provides a 7x improvement in images/second/watt, compared to traditional convolutional neural networks accelerated by GPUs.

Bob Beachler, BrainChips SVP for Marketing and Business Development, said: Our spiking neural network provides instantaneous one-shot learning, is fast at detecting, extracting and tracking objects, and is very low-power. These are critical attributes for automobile manufacturers processing the large amounts of video required for ADAS and AV applications. We look forward to working with this world-class automobile manufacturer in applying our technology to meet its requirements.

♦ The Sims 3 errors issues etc

♦ The Sims 3 errors issues etc

Some of you have been asking me about your PC &/or laptops issues or TS3 game play problems, I sincerely apologize, but I am not an expert. Unfortunately, I dont know much else besides what I read on Google, or find on their forums. I usually only play the game & fix the problems I encounter on my own, but here is how I always get an answer when I need one:
  • First things first, Google search your error code or problems, leaving out small words like "the, and, it.." etc. Go through at least the first 10 links before ditching that method & moving on.
  • If that doesnt work, your best bet is to search on their forums here, or more specifically here. If you dont find your answer, start your own thread, questions get answered pretty quickly.
  • Contacting EA will also help, but the forums are thee fastest way, & there are a lot of people there to answer all of your questions.
  • You should also check the game requirements with your PCs or laptops specs here. The game is a little demanding, & sometimes it doesnt work properly (if at all) on older systems.
Again, I am very sorry Im not much help in this area. I do hope this post has made it a lot easier in your search to fix your game! Also, I get all my computer info from my grandpa, so Im not computer savvy either. I know...Im a terrible "gamer" haha.

Android and Japanese half a year on

Android and Japanese half a year on

So its been almost half a year since I purchased my HTC Tattoo (youll remember thats an Android phone, Im no ink-junkie!), and Ive been getting a good amount of use out of it.

I often translate my way through a good(?) book on the way to work, on train journeys etc. This usually means Im crammed into one seat, with very little room to move. Previously I used my "Papyrus" denshi-jisho, which being the size of a medium size book itself left me with even less room. Id be constantly switching between resting the novel on my lap to look up a word, to resting the Papyrus on my lap to continue reading. Being only on my second Japanese book, you can imagine how I have to look up about 10 words on some pages, meaning a lot of switching, and a fair amount of irritation.

The Tattoo, on the other hand is spectacularly dinky, so I can rest the Tattoo with Aedict on one page while I read the opposite page! Very handy.

In my last blog post about Aedict I was a bit critical of the kanjipad, which requires you to write using the correct stroke order. Certainly, I would love a Tegaki style input that fits closer to my very messy way of writing kanji. However there is a nice feature of Aedict that I didnt discover until they released the new version: When looking up a kanji you can now view its stroke order. Of course, you need to first find the kanji, but as I said previously, the skip lookup and radical lookup will help you here. So, I am starting to learn the stroke order of some of the radicals, which is a great help!

I also criticized the sorting of results.. But after using Aedict for a few months, it turns out that this is not really much of an obstacle to looking up words.

Aedicts new layout is very nice too, showing you the most recently viewed results, which is pretty useful. Aedict has also been able to deinflect verbs for a while now, which has on occasion saved me a fair amount of confusion.

More than anything Aedicts lookup speed is its greatest strength. When emailing my wife and need to use a technical word (lately a lot of words about pregnancy!) its actually quicker for me to whip out my phone and search using Aedict, than it is to open a new tab, load up wwwjdic and look up a word online! Its that which impresses me the most about Aedict.

I still find looking up kanji a bit of a hassle, and that is the thing that takes the most time (I can still only translate maybe 2 pages of my book per bus ride, the same as with my Papyrus). I attribute this mainly to the kanjipad (and I guess, my slow pace at learning the stroke orders)

As well as Aedict, Ive sampled a few Japanese IMEs. I have to say, none of them are perfect. Simeji tended to mistake where I was pressing (possibly due to the Tattoos smaller screen resolution, but they should support it since it is in the market, so your guess is as good as mine), and OpenWnn Plus (which I recommended last time) had a tendency to crash. I now use OpenWnn/Flick support, which is basically the same as OpenWnn, but it doesnt crash on my Tattoo! However, when typing English, I still prefer the HTCs default input method, since you can generally just bash the keypad in the general region of the letter youre aiming for and carry on. No way can I type even half as quickly in English using any of the Japanese input methods.

Ive seen some Japanese/Chinese handwriting development occuring, which Im very excited about. Perhaps that will be useful in looking up kanji in the future? I hope it works with the HTC Tattoo!

I will also give a special mention to AnkiDroid, a simple flashcard program for Android. It works using the same deck specs as Anki. This is great for me, since I already used Anki on my desktop, and now I can sync my anki deck to my phone from the internet, allowing me to memorize such words as ?? in preperation for heading out to Japan for my the birth of my first child! Im using a beta at the moment to get hold of the sync feature, but Ive read that synchronisation is soon to come out into the stable releases (that said, I have never had any bugs or errors of any kind while using this beta, and I have a lot of confidence in their dev team who are very responsive).

Overall, the HTC Tattoo is a great device for Japanese, Im spectacularly pleased with it.

Port Channel Etherchannel

Port Channel Etherchannel

By default STP will block all but one of the links between two switches. See the the links between Cat1-Cat2 and Cat3-Cat4.

Using port-channeling between the pair of switches allows the combined links to be treated as one link from an STP perspective, so that all the parallel physical segments are used. The port channel can configured manually  or using a dynamic protocol which allows the switch to work out which ports are connected and should be part of the portchannel.

Those protocols are the Cisco-proprietary Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) and the IEEE 802.1AD Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP).

PagP - Port Aggregation Protocol

Normally you get a huge table (like the one below) which gives you the combinations that allow a port channel to be formed. This is quite hard to memorise so use this smaller table below which what each mode does (TX or RX or both)

The rules are then simple:

1) At least one end has to send a packet (ie one end has to be desirable)
2) The other has to listen (ie auto / desirable )
3) Anything else will not form a port channel using PagP. (On / On does not pass any PagP packets)

ModeSends PacketActs on Packet
AutoNoYes
DesirableYesYes
OnNoNo
OffNoNo

So the only modes that exchange PagP packets are auto and desirable. The table below shows what settings will allow a PagP port channel to form.

Either side of the link settingsPagP Port Channel formed?

Auto / AutoNo
Auto / OnNo
Auto / Off No
On / OnYes (no PagP packets passed)

Off / OffNo

802.1AD LACP - Link Aggregation Control Protocol

Similar to PagP you only need to remember this table:

  • Aggregrates up to 8 ports with the rest in standby
  • Interoperates with other vendors as its IEEE

Float Prototype Physical Design Part 1

Float Prototype Physical Design Part 1

Before building the submersible we decided to create a prototype of our float as it is simpler to make for a number of reasons.

To begin we created a rectangular, dock like structure out of pressure treated 1" x 6" boards. After trying a few sizes we settled on a 16" x 24" float. This allowed us to have enough room for the spool, spooling mechanism, batteries, and electronics. We added 2" sunken platform on the far ends  of the 24" length. These boards create two shelves that will hold batteries and electronics. A 12" gap is left in the middle for the spool and spooler.

After we finished constructing the platform we created our tether. The wire, which was generously donated by Horizon Solutions is 500 of 1032  strand 10 AWG wire. We took the two 250 lengths and twisted them together to make one, two stranded 250 tether. We then wrapped it on a plastic spool purchased on McMaster. Once the tether was on the spool we found two issues: one it seemed weak, and two the advertised hole size of the spool was not the actual hole size (weird!?). Thus we decided to create our own spool. We used 3" PVC pipe as the center, and then cut circles out of plexiglass for the two ends. We purchased threaded male caps for the PVC onto which we put the plexiglass end pieces. We then screwed on a nut (female PVC end piece) to hold the plexiglass in place.

PVC center w/male & female attachments

End piece for spool

Finished Spool

The next dilemma was creating a new spooler that could easily transfer power to the wire on the spool. At first we decided to power an aluminum rod and a metal sheet using brushes. We decided against that as there would be too much power running through the spool without any protection. We then tested using the metal ball bearings. Although a good idea, transferring power through the power through the bearings dropped out voltage by 1/12 which is unacceptable. We ended up using the aluminum rod and bearings, but not powering them. We decided to power the float using two small metal plates on the outside of the plexiglass.

The spool itself has a 3/4" aluminum rod and bearings with an OD (outer diameter) that almost fit inside the PVC and an ID (inner diameter) that almost fit the aluminum rod. As neither quite fit the bearings, we filed the PVC ends so they were a little larger and sanded the aluminum rods so they were a little smaller. Once both fit with the bearings we assembled them and moved to the last piece of the spool integration onto the float: the stands. We created two blocks of wood with holes at equal heights and added them to either side of the float. This allowed us to push the aluminum rod through the two uprights and the spool to create our spooling mechanism.

Spool on Float

After purchasing bi-polar stepper motors to control the spooling, we needed to find a way to attach them to the float. We first added plexiglass plates using the mounting bolts on the front of each motor. We made the plexiglass rectangles so that one side would stick out beyond the motor. This allowed us to create a slot in the shelf to hold the motor steady. We cut the slot out of the shelf using a router. We then needed a way to keep the motor from coming out of the slot, for which we used a U-bolt. We went through this process for two motors: one for spinning the spool and the other for spooling the wire on the PVC.

Motor under spool
Motor on shelf

The next step in making a prototype of our float was to add pulleys for the belt driven spooler. The first pulley we added was to the end of the spool itself. We took the (corrosive resistant) metal pulley off of an old bilge pump motor and cut a hole in the center so that it would fit around the male PVC end. We then secured it in place with four bolts extending through the plexiglass ends of the spool. While doing things we were careful to keep the pulley centered on the spool so that it would unwind the tether without any irregularity. We found that the nuts couldnt actually fit onto the end of the bolts due to the width of the PVC. Luckily we were able to tighten the bolts on the pulley and add a hose-clamp to hold everything in place. The setup is very strong and will work perfectly for our spooling mechanism.

Pulley for belt drive

After attaching the pulleys to the motor and to the spool we finished the "winding" mechanism. This is located underneath of the spool and will help us spool the tether more efficiently. We created a variable tension pulley opposite the motor located underneath of the spool. The belt attached between the motor and the tension pulley allows us to wind the tether on the spool efficiently. The tension pulley is circled in red:

Tension pulley
We also added timing belts to finish off the spooling mechanism. We purchased two timing belts from McMaster: one for the spool and another for the "winding" mechanism. Images of the finished spool, with the belts and pulleys attached, are below:

Spool timing belt

Entire spooling mechanism

After finishing most parts of the above water float we moved onto the pontoons that will keep it floating. We got 8" DWV PVC piping for the pontoons as well as four end caps (one for each end of two pontoons). We also got 1-3/8" PVC to act as stilts. We bolted each leg onto the float in two places. After we cut holes in the pontoons so that the legs could extend all the way through them. We tried to drill holes only just larger than the pipe so that we wouldnt need to do a lot or waterproofing, but didnt have the right bit size so we will have to find a way to water proof them. We have the legs go through the pontoons so that they will be more sturdy and less apt to break off or bend.

JavaFX ObservableList

JavaFX ObservableList

Continuing my exploration of JavaFX, another very useful feature is its collections library.  In particular, it includes automatically observable versions of the List and Map interfaces from the Java Collections framework.  These can enable very convenient GUI updates.

For example, consider a program that allows a user to enter names into a list.  JavaFX allows us to store our data internally in an ObservableList; the GUI automatically updates whenever ObservableList changes.  Heres a screenshot of the program in action:

To create the interface in SceneBuilder:

  • Create a BorderPane as the root container.
  • Add an HBox to the top of the BorderPane.
    • Place a Button and a TextField in the HBox.
  • Add a ListView to the center of the BorderPane.
The following is the Controller class I wrote to implement the functionality:
package application;

import javafx.collections.FXCollections;
import javafx.collections.ObservableList;
import javafx.fxml.FXML;
import javafx.scene.control.Button;
import javafx.scene.control.ListView;
import javafx.scene.control.TextField;

public class Controller {
@FXML
private Button add;
@FXML
private TextField name;
@FXML
private ListView visibleList;

private ObservableList names =
FXCollections.observableArrayList();

@FXML
private void initialize() {
visibleList.setItems(names);
}

@FXML
private void addName() {
if (name.getText().length() > 0) {
names.add(name.getText());
name.setText("");
}
}
}

In SceneBuilder:

  • Set up the above class as the controller.
  • Bind the three controls to the corresponding variables.
  • Bind the actions for the Button and TextView to addName().
Some notes on the code:
  • The key step here is calling the setItems() method of the visibleList object.  This is what binds the ObservableList names to the GUI.  Once this method is called, any changes to names will automatically appear in the list.
  • Note that this call must be in the initialize() method.  The visibleList object is created after the constructor call, so we cant put this in the constructor.  JavaFX ensures that initialize() is called before any other GUI code runs.
  • By attaching addName() to both the Button and the TextView, the user can add a name either way.

Revit 2017 View Range Keyboard Shortcut

Revit 2017 View Range Keyboard Shortcut

Brian Mackey wrote a post earlier today that describes two quirky issues with using the new View Range keyboard shortcut VR. It is definitely subtle, quirky and worthy of an echo.

The first quirk is having to click Apply first and then OK to close in order to make a change stick. Id run into that too and meant to write something but Brian was quicker to the keyboard. The other, and very important, thing to know is that using it ignores when a View Template has been assigned to a view, meaning the template is supposed to be controlling the parameters for View Range. Thats not good! Check out his thoughts.

As such it is no longer his favorite new subtle feature and Im inclined to agree, too bad.

Adeona LoJack for laptop

Adeona LoJack for laptop

BB told me a interesting free software: Adeona.
http://adeona.cs.washington.eduThis program is for the case that your laptop is stolen.
This software periodically run on background, gather network information and give you some hints where your laptop is.

The website recommend you do *not* try to catch the thief by yourself even when you find out where it is.

One interesting thing is the software can take a picture of the thief when your computer is MacBook series, which has a camera at top of the LCD.

The logic was simple, so that I made similar one by myself.Using my shell program will get some network information and picture file onto your email box every half hour; you may be able to use some "filters" for the spam-like emails.In order to use this, you need to set your email address on the script file, "email", and install two software: iSightCapture, mutt.
I dont know which way is easiest way to install mutt, but I used "Mac Port".

You can add a schedule onto your "crontab" like this:
0,30 * * * * /Users/wrice/Applications/sendPicture.sh
Enjoy your safer environment.
