Samsung Takes The Number One Spot For The First Time
Although Nokia have been going through a rather difficult spell in recent years, they have still been managing to cling on to the top spot when it comes to global sales of cellphones – until now. According to new research conducted by a number of analytics firms, Samsung have ousted Nokia from the top of the leader board.
The reports, conducted by IHS iSuppli and Strategy Analytics show that the Finnish handset maker has been unable to cling for dear life on the top spot and has finally been knocked from the perch by Samsung due to Nokia’s poor sales performances of recent times.
In the first quarter of 2012, Nokia’s market share dropped down to a low of 22.5% while Samsung raced into the lead by holding a 25.4% of the global mobile market. In the same period, Apple were sitting with a 9.5% hold, which may not seem like a great deal but considering the company only produces the iPhone, this is quite some achievement.
One of the main reasons for Nokia’s fall from the top of the cellular grace was down to the company’s low-end device sales in emerging markets dropping off, something that they were unable to offset with the sales of their top-end devices like the new Lumia range of smartphones. Neil Mawston, who operates as the Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, reminisced about Nokia’s current issues and their golden years:
Nokia’s volumes were squeezed at both ends, as low-end feature phone shipments in emerging markets stalled and high-end Microsoft Lumia smartphones were unable to offset the rapid decline of Nokia’s legacy Symbian business. Nokia was the world’s largest handset vendor between 1998 and 2011, for 14 years, before finally yielding top position to rival Samsung this quarter.
Although the statistics refer to sales of all mobile phones, the main focus of the market is currently centered around top-end smartphones, sales of which suffered in the first quarter of 2012 across all major manufacturers. As the table below from IHS shows, Apple suffered a 5% decline is sales with Samsung experiencing a change of 11% during the same period. Nokia’s woes continued as their shipments of smartphones dropped by eight million units in the first quarter.
We have been used to seeing extraordinary boom in this market, but at the minute consumers are showing a reluctance in the marketplace with overall handset sales growing by a relatively small 3.3%. One of the firms involved in the research predicts that smartphone sales will be the only ones to increase in the next twelve months, growing by an estimated 35% while sales of standard handsets will decline.

Google Maps for iOS

A bit late posting this with all that was going on yesterday, but Google Maps is now available for iOS. Google Maps used to be a native service on iOS, until Apple removed it and launched their own maps application, which was a unmitigated disaster.
You can put the Apple Maps nightmare behind you and download Google Maps from the app store. The App works with iOS 5.1 or better.

Privacy Breaking Techniques for Android

Playing psychological games with a hostage to retrieve crucial and mission critical information from them is something that humanity has done for a long, long time, but who would have thought that smartphones, too, are not exempt from a certain kind of "torture"? I am not referring to threatening to smash your Android handset with a hammer lest it gives up its unlock code, but rather, a team at Erlangens Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) managed to discover a method of accessing an encrypted Android devices contact lists, browsing histories and photos simply by sending it to the freezer, and using the FROST (Forensic Recovery Of Scrambled Telephones) method afterwards.
You can get the secret information of any Android operating systems mobile like Phone number, Pictures, Conversation and Internet access information. Its happen only when you take your smartphone on cool atmosphere. All secret information having in your smartphone will come out so easily.
This experiment was done by a group of researchers of University of Erlanejana Nuremberg Germany. They take the android operating smartphone below the freezing temperature (Minus Ten degree Celsius).
Once the well chilled Android smartphone has reached the desired temperature, connecting and disconnecting the battery of the frozen device quickly would force the handset into a vulnerable mode. This particular loophole would then open a window of opportunity to boot it up using custom-built software, bypassing the pre-installed Android operating system along the way. This custom code has been dubbed FROST as mentioned above.
FROST will allow the researchers to copy sensitive data on the handset which can then be analysed on a separate compute later on. Not only that, a chilled device would also experience slower data fades from memory, which enables hackers or digital forensic teams to obtain encryption keys while speeding up the unscrambling process when it comes to a phone’s content.

MOGA Bluetooth Controller for Android Arrives October 21

Yes, there are more than a handful of different smartphone gamepad controllers and accessories out there, but its hard to deny that PowerAs MOGA Bluetooth Controller looks pretty darn good. With smartphones becoming more and more powerful and mobile gaming become more advanced, it certainly makes sense that accessory makers are rushing to create their own unique gamepad controllers.

But as entertaining as poking your phone can be, the only way to truly harness the gaming potential of smartphone or tablet devices is with the use of a proper controller. Touchscreens, gyroscopes and accelerometers are great, but nothing compares to a good old fashioned multi-button controller. Thats where MOGA comes in. Snapping onto your smartphone, the controller connects via Bluetooth for an enhanced mobile gaming experience.
The only downside is that MOGA is only compatible with Android games that are made specifically for gamepads. The good news is PowerA has already worked out deals with major mobile game developers such as Gameloft, Namco, Sega, Atari and Remedy Entertainment. The controller is set to release October 21, with a price tag of $50.

Apple Releases iOS 4 3 1 For All Apple Product
All of those Apple iPhone 4 users getting todays upgrade to iOS 4.3.1, please take one step forward. Uh, not so fast you Verizon customers. Outside of Big Reds Apple iPhone 4 users (who are still using iOS 4.2.6 launched in January), those using the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation) the original iPad and iPad 2 can upgrade to the newly launched iOS 4.3.1.The upgrade includes a fix for a graphics bug on the 4th generation iPod touch, repairs a bug relating to connectivity on some cellular networks, fixes a bug that created a flickering image when using Apple Digital AV Adapter with some television sets, and fixes an issue relating to authenticating with some enterprise web services.
The release of the upgrade is somewhat of a surprise to iOS owners as it had been rumored that the 4.3.1 upgrade would not be released for another two weeks. While the software was released earlier than expected, an upgrade was expected after researcher Charles Miller discovered a flaw in mobile Safari during the Pwn2Own hacking contest. During the contest, Miller shared the flaw with Apple in an effort to have the problem repaired.

Android 4 1 1 Jelly Bean is now available for Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100

Android users aren’t only waiting for Samsung to roll out its Jelly Bean updates for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S2 smartphones but they’re also looking forward to see CyanogenMod 10 released for those devices.
A few days ago I told you that Jelly Bean has been ported to the Galaxy S2 international version, but also that a preview CM10 version for the Galaxy S3 was available. Now, Im about to tell you that international Galaxy S2 owners can enjoy a preview of CM10 based on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on their Samusng GT-I9100 Galaxy S2 device.
Like always, Im going to remind you that Im not encouraging you to install any custom ROMs on your Android handset, and that it’s up to you to proceed with such endeavors. However, once you choose this path, make sure you follow all the available instructions – in this case by following the “official” xda-developers Forum thread – when installing the CM10 preview on the handset.
And do remember that this is a preview build, which means that not everything may work according to expectations, although we’re sure things are going to be improved soon.
Have you installed CM 10 on your international Galaxy S2 version?
