How to Get Windows 3 1 Video and Sound Working on ANY PC or Emulator This Doesnt include DOSBox!
Super Easy, Lets get Started!
1. Open Windows Setup in the "Main" program group
2. If using WfW 3.11, Change the video driver from VGA to Super VGA-256 Colors (small fonts) For physical computers, I recommend 1024x768. For emulated computers, I recommend 640x480 or 800x600. When asked to restart, Press Continue, Click the File menu in Program Manager and Exit Windows.
3. If you are not using WfW 3.11 download this: http://www.resourcemate.com/other/svga.exe and create a folder called "svga", place svga.exe in this folder, run it, Go to Windows Setup in the Main group and change VGA to Other and load drivers from the SVGA Folder (Use same recommended resolutions), Press Continue and Exit Windows.
4. For all versions of Win3.1x, Download SVGAPTCH.EXE Here: http://www.japheth.de/Download/Win16/svgaptch.zip, Place it in the SYSTEM folder and type svgaptch -p from the SYSTEM Folder, Start Windows and enjoy!
Now for Sound:
METHOD 1 (Tested):
1. Download this: http://www.pcworld.com/product/949201/pc-speaker-driver-for-win-3-1.html, Create a folder called "speaker" and Launch Speaker.exe from DOS.
2. Start Windows, Open Control Panel, Go to Drivers, Press Add and Choose Install Unlisted or Updated Driver.
3. Use the Drivers from the Speaker folder, Adjust the settings and Restart Windows. On a physical computer, You should now hear the login sound coming from the PC tower where PC speakers are located or if using an emulator, You should now hear the login sound from the VM and now that youve got sound working, Enjoy!
METHOD 2 (Untested but said to work with Apogee games wether you have an actual SB Card or not.):
1. Add this line to your autoexec.bat: SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 T6.
2. Install SB1.5 Driver in Windows 3.1.
3. Enjoy.
