The phone which a lot of you have been waiting for is finally officially here: the Nokia Lumia 920. I am not sure what the suggested retail price is, but the Nokia Lumia 920 can be had for Php25,750. Yup, this is with a full manufacturers warranty.
This Nokia Lumia 920 is the current king of Windows Phones. Putting this phone on the top of the Windows 8 Pack is the combination of a 4.5-inch HD (768 x 1280) PureMotion HD+ display with clear black technology, a 8MP primary camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and optical image stabilization, and finally an LTE chip.
This is the first smartphone with optical image stabilization. GSMArena explains how all this works. A gyroscope is used to detect the motion of the phone and the whole optical assembly moves in the opposite direction to cancel out the movement. That happens 500 times a second.

What is AMOLED?

AMOLED stands for “active-matrix organic light-emitting diode” – a rather complex term that you don’t have to remember as long as you know how it works.
The technology, especially used in Samsung-made Android devices, is very popular among Android device makers, although not everyone in the mobile game can use it as they please. Because Samsung is one of the main AMOLED panel makers, Im not surprised to see the displays used especially in Samsung devices, with its direct competition (HTC, Motorola and others) having to sometimes wait for longer periods of time to get their AMOLED supplies, and even to replace AMOLED panels with different screen technology altogether.
How do AMOLED displays work?

Active matrix (AM) OLED displays stack cathode, organic, and anode layers on top of another layer – or substrate – that contains circuitry. The pixels are defined by the deposition of the organic material in a continuous, discrete “dot” pattern. Each pixel is activated directly: A corresponding circuit delivers voltage to the cathode and anode materials, stimulating the middle organic layer. AMOLED pixels turn on and off more than three times faster than the speed of conventional motion picture film – making these displays ideal for fluid, full-motion video.

The image is superior, in some cases, than the one experienced on devices using different screen technology, and it offers a better performance in direct sunlight (again, in some cases.)

AMOLED: Super, HD, Plus & others
Naturally, the AMOLED development is going forward, with various companies further experimenting ways of taking advantage of the technology in future devices. Therefore, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear various other terms used in conjunction with AMOLED. These include: Super AMOLED, Super AMOLED Plus, Super AMOLED Advanced and HD AMOLED Plus. Such displays are found in various Android handsets and tablets available in stores right now. Here’s what it all means:
Super AMOLED is what Samsung calls its own AMOLED display technology because the display actually includes a digitizer (the component of the screen that detects touch). Super AMOLED screens offer a much better viewing experience in sunlight conditions and it is found in some popular devices including: Samsung Galaxy S, Google Nexus S, Samsung Focus and Samsung Omnia W.

Super AMOLED Plus is another display-related term marketed by Samsung. In comparison to AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays, the Super AMOLED Plus displays are even more energy efficient and brighter. Which AMOLED display type is best for me?
When it comes to choosing your next smartphone, the size of the display and the technology behind it can be pretty important, although these are not the only factors you should be interested in when purchasing the device – other things to consider include processor speed, 3G/4G support, OS version and upgradeability, battery life, compatibility with worldwide carriers and even camera(s) performance.
But when it comes to choosing between the different AMOLED displays mentioned above, you’ll need a deeper understanding of how these display work and how they could better suit your needs.
Are you looking for finer images?
Do you plan to use the device out in the open a lot?
Are you constantly streaming videos and using graphics-rich apps and games?
These are things you should think about when choosing an AMOLED display type.
In other words, there isn’t necessarily a best one, but if you were to choose a device by the kind of AMOLED display it comes with, then you’d better get a Super AMOLED Plus or HD Super AMOLED screen. These are the kind of panels that you’ll find in the latest Android handsets from Samsung, therefore the devices that equip such panels will certainly meet your needs when it comes to CPU performance, connectivity choices or OS version.
The Super AMOLED Plus panel has an increased number of subpixels, which means the image is crispier, close to Retina Display – but not necessarily, as a higher resolution is also needed to achieve such performance. The HD Super AMOLED display sacrifices sharpness in favor of a HD resolution. This is achieved by using the PenTile technology that’s also found in regular Super AMOLED screens, which uses fewer subpixels to achieve larger resolutions.

PenTile or PenTile Matrix is a technology that refers to subpixel arrangement in AMOLED displays. PenTile screens have a RGBG (Red-Green-Blue-Green) pixel layout – see image below – compared to regular displays that rely on an RGB-RGB pattern. The advantage is that PenTile displays can offer a higher resolution utilizing less pixels, but the disadvantage is that image is not as sharp as you’d expect it to be exactly because less pixels are involved.

Of the AMOLED variants mentioned above, only the Super AMOLED Plus displays offer an RGB-RGB arrangement, and therefore are capable of offering a crisper image.
Other mobile display kinds
While AMOLED displays are mostly used by Samsung in their Android and Windows Phone devices, you are going to find various AMOLED panels in various mobile gadgets, from smartphones and tablets to PMPs, gaming consoles and digital cameras.
But since we’re focusing on Android devices over here, we’ll note that the competition can use other display technologies marketed under different monikers such as Retina Display (Apple) or SLCD (Sony, Samsung, HTC, others).
Other uses
AMOLED displays are currently used in mobile devices although we’re expecting the companies involved to continuously develop the technology to include it in bigger devices (namely HDTVs) once larger AMOLED panels become more budget-friendly. Samsung Takes The Number One Spot For The First Time
Although Nokia have been going through a rather difficult spell in recent years, they have still been managing to cling on to the top spot when it comes to global sales of cellphones – until now. According to new research conducted by a number of analytics firms, Samsung have ousted Nokia from the top of the leader board.
The reports, conducted by IHS iSuppli and Strategy Analytics show that the Finnish handset maker has been unable to cling for dear life on the top spot and has finally been knocked from the perch by Samsung due to Nokia’s poor sales performances of recent times.
In the first quarter of 2012, Nokia’s market share dropped down to a low of 22.5% while Samsung raced into the lead by holding a 25.4% of the global mobile market. In the same period, Apple were sitting with a 9.5% hold, which may not seem like a great deal but considering the company only produces the iPhone, this is quite some achievement.
One of the main reasons for Nokia’s fall from the top of the cellular grace was down to the company’s low-end device sales in emerging markets dropping off, something that they were unable to offset with the sales of their top-end devices like the new Lumia range of smartphones. Neil Mawston, who operates as the Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, reminisced about Nokia’s current issues and their golden years:
Nokia’s volumes were squeezed at both ends, as low-end feature phone shipments in emerging markets stalled and high-end Microsoft Lumia smartphones were unable to offset the rapid decline of Nokia’s legacy Symbian business. Nokia was the world’s largest handset vendor between 1998 and 2011, for 14 years, before finally yielding top position to rival Samsung this quarter.
Although the statistics refer to sales of all mobile phones, the main focus of the market is currently centered around top-end smartphones, sales of which suffered in the first quarter of 2012 across all major manufacturers. As the table below from IHS shows, Apple suffered a 5% decline is sales with Samsung experiencing a change of 11% during the same period. Nokia’s woes continued as their shipments of smartphones dropped by eight million units in the first quarter.
We have been used to seeing extraordinary boom in this market, but at the minute consumers are showing a reluctance in the marketplace with overall handset sales growing by a relatively small 3.3%. One of the firms involved in the research predicts that smartphone sales will be the only ones to increase in the next twelve months, growing by an estimated 35% while sales of standard handsets will decline.
Globe Telecom offering the Nokia Lumia 610 Plan 999
The Nokia Lumia 610 is the lowest priced Windows Phone device available. It retails for Php10,990 and offers a decent kit for the price, with a 3.7-inch WVGA (480 x 800) display and 8 GB of internal storage. It also has Nokia Drive. Nokias voice guided turn by turn navigation system. It has a decent 5 MP camera, though video recording is limited to VGA quality. On the downside, it wont be upgraded to the next version of the Windows Phone operating system, Windows Phone 8. Still, that is always a tradeoff when buying entry level smartphones.
Globe Telecom is offering the Nokia Lumia 610 at Plan 999. You can get it under a consumable plan with three freebies, although a Data Add-On is required. The cheapest Data Add-On is 50 MB of data at Php99.
So for Php1,098 you can get the Nokia Lumia 610 free with:

The Nexus One end its life as an Astronaut
Remember the first Google Nexus phone, the HTC built Nexus One? It looks like the phone is ending its life as an Astronaut.
As part of a new project to lower the cost of satellites, NASA successfully launched NASAs 10cm-cubed CubeSat Satellites. The CubeSats are constructed from commercial off-the-shelf components, which each satellite costing between US$3500 and US$7000 to build. To keep the costs down, unmodified smartphones are used as the computer for the satellite. Three Android powered HTC Nexus One phones get the honor of powering the first CubeSats.
They Nexus Ones are equipped with a larger lithium-ion battery pack and a more powerful radio for transmitting data. Other than that, it really is just an off-the shelf Android phones. The phone camera is even used to capture and transmit images.
I was pretty sure I would be picking up a Samsung Galaxy S4 to replace my HTC Desire HD. Now, I really feel like maybe taking ONE more spin with HTC.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Android 3 0 Officially
There’s a 5-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3-megapixel webcam up front; meanwhile inside there’s 16GB or 32GB of storage, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and all the usual sensors: accelerometer, GPS, digital compass, etc. The slate’s internal battery is good for 9.5hrs alone, but ASUS has sensibly used the keyboard attachment to boost that by a further 6.5hrs; you also get a touchpad, 3.5mm audio jack, two USB ports and an SD card reader. We can’t help but wish Acer had packed a battery into their Iconia Tab W500 keyboard slice too.
Unfortunately there’s still no sign of official pricing, though there’s the hint of a €399 ($565) sticker from a European retailer last week. We’ll find out more at ASUS’ official Eee Pad Transformer launch event next week, which will give us a chance to check out the differences between the prototype we played with earlier in the year and the final model.
